NORTHERN PENINSULA

The history of Newfoundland and Labrador is largely a story of adaptation to the challenges and opportunities presented by its unique geographical characteristics.

Icebergs for example are carried southwards by the Labrador Current coming mainly from the calving fronts of tidewater glaciers in West Greenland. In recent years, water from iceberg ice has been used commercially because of its purity and novelty, while iceberg-viewing has become an increasingly popular attraction for tourists.

Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve consists of some fascinating geological features such as the sea cave at Whale Cove, known locally as the Big Oven.  This impressive cave, is generally clean of fallen rock and contains a sea pool with shingle gravels. There are also a series of small rounded holes in the limestone, locally known as the Cannon Holes.

Burnt Cape contains a rich mixture of arctic and calciphilous (calcium loving) plants, including the rare Burnt Cape Cinquefoil (Potentilla usticapensis), Small Roundleaf Orchid (Amerorchis rotundiflolia), Fairy Slipper Orchid (Calypso bulbosa), Dwarf Hawk’s Beard (Crepis nana) and River Beauty (Epilobium latifolium). The site also has a population of the threatened Fernald’s Braya (Braya fernaldii).3 BUll Moose

The opportunity offered to view rare plants and explore an ecological reserve on foot is a rare privilege.

To further your sightseeing experience, you will encounter Moose at any time of the day, along with beautiful Lighthouses, and of course Gros Morne Park for the hiker in you.  You will need more than a week, more than one trip to see it all!
